Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine that originated in India more than 3,000 years ago. The term “Ayurveda” comes from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (knowledge), meaning “the knowledge of life.” It is a holistic approach to health and wellness that seeks to balance the body, mind, and spirit to promote long term wellbeing.

Ayurveda is built on holistic principles that focus on maintaining balance in the body, mind, and spirit to prevent illness and promote wellbeing.

The Three Doshas

Ayurveda classifies individuals into three primary energies (doshas):

Vata (air and space)

Governs movement, creativity, and the nervous system.

Pitta (fire and water)

Governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation.

Plain black silhouette of owl

Kapha (earth and water)

Governs structure, immunity, and stability.

Each person has a unique balance of doshas (prakriti), and imbalance (vikriti) is believed to be linked to conditions and illness.

The Five Elements (Panchamahabhuta)

All matter is composed of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space.
These elements interact to form the doshas.

Health is a state of balance in the doshas, tissues (dhatus), waste products (malas), and digestive fire (agni). Illness and disease can occur when doshas are imbalanced due to factors like diet, lifestyle, and environment. Ayurveda focuses on prevention rather than remedy, emphasising daily routines (dinacharya), and personalised lifestyle choices to prevent illness; with individualised therapies customised based on the individual’s dosha, constitution, and specific health needs.

Personalised and Preventive Approach to Health

Ayurveda offers a personalised and preventive approach to health that aligns with modern concepts like stress management and gut health. While I am not a certified Ayurvedic practitioner or doctor, I am trained in the foundational principles of Ayurveda and specialise in providing general guidance. Through exploratory consultations, I assist in identifying your unique Dosha constitution and offer tailored recommendations for natural remedies that can be integrated into your daily routine to promote balance and enhance overall wellbeing. My approach is rooted in the holistic philosophy of Ayurveda, ensuring personalised support for your health and lifestyle goals.

Always consult with a qualified practitioner and consider any potential interactions with conventional medicine.
